He was the son of Henry Sandes and Helena Fletcher of Cumberland.
He was one of the "Forty-nine Officers" and was awarded land in Kerry forfeited under the Commonwealth of England and in lieu of arrears payment for service in the Wars of Ireland under King Charles I. (see reference notes)
