He served as a private in the army from 1917 to 1919 at Camp Henry Knox (now Fort Knox, United States Bullion Depository), Kentucky. He was admitted to the Sanitarium for disabled volunteer soldiers at Battle Mountain, Hot Springs South Dakota in January 1930 suffering from Tuberculosis and was there on and off until he was discharged on 5 October 1931.
