Son of Frank Sowter Barnwell, and of Marjorie Barnwell, of Stoke Bishop, Bristol. Awarded the King's Medal, R.A.F. College, Cranwell, 1939. His brothers Flt. Lieut. Richard Antony Barnwell and Pilot Offr. David Usher Barnwell, D.F.C., also died on Service.
