Launcelot Rafe Sandes, decedent

Dear Mr. Sandes:
Please refer to the e-mails and attachments from Mr. Jerry Hershberg, forwarded to you with this e-mail.
Mr. Hershberg has been nominated as the executor of the estate of Mr. Launcelot Rafe Sandes, who passed away at his home in Torrance, California, on July 18, 2011. I represent Mr. Hershberg.
We are trying to find the next of kin of the decedent on his father's side. The decedent died a single man with no children. His father, as far as we know, was Lancelot Ralph William Sandes, born in Dublin on March 11, 1890.
The decedent's paternal grandfather, as far as we know, was William Henry Sandes, born in Ireland in 1849.
We have scraps of information from various sources, but we need to determine which relatives of the decedent on his father's side survived the decedent, who as I have said passed away on July 18, 2011.
We are hoping you might be able to help us. I found your name on the internet, at ancestry.com, where your bio indicates that you live in Scotland with your wife and two Golden Labradors, and are "an amateur Genealogist specializing in the Sandes family from County Kerry." We have information about the decedent that might interest you as the family genealogist.
It happens, also, that I am from Newry, Co. Down, myself, though I have lived in the USA since 1970, and have been practicing law in California since 1979.
Incidentally, the Bishop of Kerry, Dr. William ("Bill") Murphy, taught me Latin (or tried to) at St .Colman's College, Newry, where I was a student back in the sixties. It is, indeed, as they say, a small world.
I look forward to sharing with you whatever information can be put together regarding the decedent, Launcelot Rafe Sandes.
Thank you.
Very truly yours,
John Mann

John,
I spoke too soon. I found entries for the Sandes family on http://www.irishgenealogy.ie. This appears to be an official site for the Irish government. It shows that Rafe’s grandfather had a daughter in addition to his father. There is a baptism record for Maura Rose Sandes. The father and mother’s names are the same as for Rafe’s father. However I have found no entry for marriage or death. This could mean that she died at birth. I will keep looking. I have attached her baptism record. She is number 135.

John,
After our conversation I went to Lances’ trailer and I looked into his notebooks. I found this typed document with Lances’ (Rafe’s) annotations. He lists only one child for his grandparents. But he lists two children for his great-grandparents. So he does not leave out siblings. His father is listed as Lancelot Ralph William Sandes. However “Ralph” and “Rafe” are forms of the the same name. They are probably pronounced without the “L.”
Jerry
